Postgraduate qualifications

The University of Warwick, together with NASES, NCWE and AGCAS offer a Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and Masters in the Management of Student Work Experience(MSWE)which encourages professionalism across the education and employment sector. This is open to anyone currently working or wishing to work in HE and FE, providing information, advice, and guidance to students, in relation to employment and work experience; from part-time jobs to placements, and vacation work to volunteering.

Delivered by the University of Warwick these courses were launched following three years' research and development through a unique collaboration between the University of Reading and NASES, supported by AGCAS and NCWE, kindly funded by HECSU.

The programmes will enable practitioners to develop their knowledge and skills in relation to the following key areas of professional practice:

  • working with students and employers as clients of the service;
  • working with educational institutions to establish links between the curriculum and student work experience;
  • the operational and strategic management of the service.

Eligibility

The standard academic entry requirement is a degree of any discipline. However, non-graduates with relevant experience and/or an equivalent qualification will be considered. Applicants with alternative qualifications are welcome to discuss these with the admissions tutor.

It is not necessary to be a member of NASES to undertake the qualification. It is possible to undertake the qualification without being employed in one of the roles above, however it will be essential to organise placement work within the sector, as all assignments are work-based.

Teaching methods

The qualifications are all completed via a blend of residential courses and distance learning. Assessment is based on real world examples and work-based projects. There are opportunities to tailor assignments towards current workplace needs.

It is usual to complete two modules per year, therefore the certificate could be completed within 18 months, but candidates have a maximum of three years to complete. The diploma could be completed within three years but candidates have a maximum of five years to complete.

Modules are undertaken individually utilising the University of Warwick VLE (Virtual Learning Environment). These modules comprise of readings, activities, exercises and reports. This medium will allow for ‘group discussions’ with others studying the module and for interaction with the tutor. The additional support of a mentor is available on request from NASES.
